The Porsche 904

Ok, this is another one of my favorites. The type 904, officially known as the Carrera GTS, was indeed a racecar, but nevertheless was legal on the street. In the beginning, 100 cars were planned for production, and then another 100 later, but alas only about 10% were ever delivered to the buyers. The time was 1963, around the same time their new model, called a "911" was was born. The flat 6 cylinder engine was to be used in the 904, but development problems caused Porsche to bring back the 4 cylinder Carrera engine. Even so, some "later" 904's, built in few number strictly for racing, contained 6 and 8-cylinder engines.

The production 904 had a 2.0 Liter (1,966cc) 4 cam 4 cylinder, mounted behind the driver, and produced 185 horsepower at 7,000 rpms. The body was all fiberglass, and after bonded to the chassis wieghed only 1,350lbs! It had a 29 gallon fuel tank, and even when full allowed the 904 to go from 0-60 mph in 6.4 secs. The top speed was 161mph. Even more impressive for 1964, it could go from 50-70mph in only 2.5secs.
